Habib University: The leading liberal arts university in Pakistan

Habib University: The leading liberal arts university in Pakistan

I first heard of Habib University a little more than a decade ago, when it opened its doors to students, taking in its first batch of undergraduate students in the fields of engineering, sciences, arts, humanities, and social sciences. Habib University differentiated itself from other universities not just in the city but in the entire country because of its strong liberal arts focus that required students to take a set of liberal arts courses consisting of sociology, history, philosophy, and anthropology.

What are liberal arts?

Liberal arts colleges and universities essentially aim to impart broad general knowledge and develop broad intellectual capacities, as opposed to a narrower technical or pre-professional approach. Habib University follows the American liberal arts system.

Why should we study liberal arts Universities?

Habib University’s website states that “A liberal arts education combines breadth of study across several broad fields of knowledge with depth of understanding in a major field of study. This combination of breadth and depth produces graduates who possess impressive analytical capacity and have the ability to think in unconventional and remarkably creative ways.” The university offers a distinctive world-class liberal arts curriculum that is contextually relevant and grounded in the South Asian context and heritage. As our world keeps on changing, job markets are evolving, and professions are becoming more integrated, the liberal arts model of education is proving to be the best way forward.

Why Habib University?

Habib University has two main schools; one is the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences that offers undergraduate degrees in Social Development and Policy, Communications and Designs, and Comparative Humanities. The other main school is the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering, which offers undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science. What stands apart at Habib University is that along with offering these majors, it also offers minors in both its schools. These minors include comparative literature, philosophy, history, communication, design, physics, mathematics, bioscience, and many others. The university states that “Minors are an integral part of the liberal arts and sciences educational experience at HU as they allow you to explore your interests, personalize, and diversify your undergraduate programs.” The benefits of graduating with a minor are

A chance to pursue a wide range of post-graduate degree programs, dependent on your major-minor combination.

The ability to qualify for an expansive range of career options due to a uniquely specialized degree program

The development and utilization of a variety of interdisciplinary skill sets that will help students in their future entrepreneurial and academic endeavors.
