Inside SZABIST’s Media Sciences Department

Image
Let’s be honest, choosing a major is hard. You’re 18, maybe 19, and somehow expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life? Yikes. But for some of us, the signs were always there. Maybe you were the one who always had a camera in hand. Or the one who edited random videos for fun. Or maybe you were that kid who’d look at a billboard and think, “Ugh, I could’ve done better.” If any of that sounds familiar so welcome home. You’re one of us. At SZABIST’s Media Sciences Department, things are a little… different. The vibe isn’t “sit down, take notes, memorize facts.” It’s more like “here’s a camera, a mic, a moodboard, and a deadline — go make something that matters.” Seriously, the chaos is real. But it’s the good kind. The kind where you stay up editing a short film, or rehearse lines for your ad pitch in the cafeteria, or argue over lighting setups with your group for three hours straight. (We’ve all been there.) This place isn’t just a degree, it’s a full-on creative boo...

Behind the Scenes, Organizing the SZABIST Media Festival

Image
Every year, SZABIST Media Festival comes with a bang glittering lights, celebrity appearances, provocative panels, and a campus charged with energy. Nobody sees, however, the chaos, the late-night coffee binges, and mini-meltdowns that occur behind closed doors to create those three flawless days. Putting this festival together is creating a full-length movie when our storyline keeps changing, our actors don't turn up sometimes, and our crew members are half asleep, half wired with adrenalin and yet we manage. Preparations start a month ahead, although emotionally it might as well be a lifetime. The moment the festival gets announced, teams are created with fancy names design, logistics, marketing, content, media but behind those glorious names are students juggling assignments, classes, and festival work like a bunch of circus acrobatics. You'd think having teams would smooth out stuff. No chance. What it means is we now have multiple groups of people pointing fingers at eac...

Habib University: The leading liberal arts university in Pakistan

Image
Habib University: The leading liberal arts university in Pakistan   I first heard of Habib University a little more than a decade ago, when it opened its doors to students, taking in its first batch of undergraduate students in the fields of engineering, sciences, arts, humanities, and social sciences. Habib University differentiated itself from other universities not just in the city but in the entire country because of its strong liberal arts focus that required students to take a set of liberal arts courses consisting of sociology, history, philosophy, and anthropology. What are liberal arts? Liberal arts colleges and universities essentially aim to impart broad general knowledge and develop broad intellectual capacities, as opposed to a narrower technical or pre-professional approach. Habib University follows the American liberal arts system. Why should we study liberal arts Universities?  Habib University’s website states that “A liberal arts education combines ...
