For art universities the admission criteria is based on your level of artistic skill, how do we measure that? It's simple portfolio. This article will give you tips to keep in mind when making your portfolio
Tip 1 understand your degree
IVS offers a great range of degrees of many kinds, you want to make sure your portfolio reflects the degree you're going for, if you're going for communications and design, maybe try to include some more graphic design work or photography, as to demonstrate some proficiency in those areas. If you're going for fine arts then maybe add more paintings, sketches and more figure drawings. Display the skills you'll need to do in your degree for the best shot.
Go through course outlines and guides given to you in our prospectus in order to really hone into the degree you are going for.
Tip 2 show us how you think
This section deals with our favorite part experimentation and ideation. At IVS we will be teaching you many skills, ones that include drawing, designing and many other foundational skills you will need in your artistic journey. This is why it's extremely important in your portfolio- we want to see how you think, what makes your ideas unique. Don't just show us your best work but also show us the work that's fundamentally you
Show us works in progress, show us how you got to your final steps, show us your doodles.
Tip 3 show your influences
Include in your portfolio, visual references that are prevalent in your work, film still, design work and illustrations that inspire you. Moreover, include in your portfolio what you specifically like about it. Building on the previous tip, we want to know how you think.
Tip 4 presentation
Try to present your portfolio in a visually appealing manner, what we mean by this is when constructing the file in which your portfolio will be, pick a font that is visually pleasing to look at, moreover pick one that doesn't distract from the work inside. A Lot of young creatives can get carried away my picking aesthetics for portfolios that may clash with the artwork inside. So for your portfolio try to pick something that's more minimalistic and doesn't clash with what's already inside
To conclude
Make this portfolio your own, year after year we get many talented applicants, and these tips are not a guarantee you will get in, however it will help us understand you better, which in itself is supposed to be what a portfolio is, it shouldn't just be a collection of your best work but also a collection of the work that speaks the most about you, and who you are as a creative, with that said best of luck and happy applying!
